Beautifully brutal.

There's action aplenty in this little tale. From a drunken tavern fight to Lovecraftian abominations, Gorias La Gaul proves over and over that he's a legendary fighter for a reason. I couldn't help being reminded of Robert E. Howard's Conan and Bran Mak Morn, though Gorias is cruder than both and much more barbarian than diplomat. Recruited into a plot of, ostensibly, murdering an unfit king--a plot that doesn't entirely play out in this story--Gorias finds himself face to face with one of the most cunningly wrought abominations I've ever encountered.

It's a tale not for the squeamish, yet Shrewsbury's Gorias is eminently likable despite his rough edges, and there are enough references to the creations of H. P. Lovecraft and Lin Carter to make even the most diehard Mythos fan drool.
