Christmas novella set at a department store in Gilded Age New York (1895). I really need to stop trying to read Shupe. I don't get along with her research style; she writes possible but not plausible - so the FMC casually mentions frequent long-distance telephone calls home, sews all her own clothes and claims that as a matter of pride rather than poverty/necessity (while somehow also working long hours as a department store designer and living in a boarding house room that I doubt could fit a sewing machine), has a job but functions more independently in it than I can quite believe for 1895, etc. I also don't get along with the romance style, honestly - the MMC here is an extremely neglectful rich dude with a winsome plot moppet daughter who yearns for nothing so much as (1) her father's love and (2) a mommy. I need to acknowledge that Shupe is not for me, I think, which is a shame because I love the setting.

It could've benefit from having a few more chapters. I also think it having a handjob scene but not a actual sex scene was a weird decision. But overall enjoyed the characters.

3.5: I wasn’t crazy about the age gap, but outside of that, no major complaints. I will be picking up more of Shupe’s books. This was a sweet novella, with a lovely ending. Even if you’re not a Christmas/holidays person, I think you’d still enjoy this.

Loved this!!

I know less about the gilded age but this has definitely peaked my interest and will be reading many more gilded age romances now.

As always with novellas I just want more. Can’t wait to read more of Joanna Shupe.
