Não consegui encontrar nenhum ponto em que me relacionasse com esta narrativa. Uma descrição da vida náutica, sem que os pontos altos ou baixos da narrativa se afastem muito do mediano. É fraco sem ser mau.

Who knew it was possible to write a coming-of-age tale about a grown man? This is not an action-driven story, but rather a nuanced portrait of a new captain finding his place on the seas. It was quite well-written and well-structured, but for some reason I had a difficult time getting into it. I would have liked to have seen more pushback on the era-typical views on colonialism, but I understand why Conrad didn't go there in this particular work. Would still recommend.

Conrad, at his precise best, delivers a maritime thriller — a young sea captain pushed to the limit. It’s a coming of age story for the ages.

While I do not hold this novella in the highest regard, there was a lot that I could relate to and appreciate about it. The shadow line as the boundary between innocence and maturity, sanity and insanity, life and death, was an interesting philosophical concept and it plays out very well in this confessional form of story. However, a lot of the hero's actions are somewhat abrupt and it is hard to assign identifiable qualities to him as he is quite inconsistent in his decision-making and interactions. The only thing about him that doesn't change is his love and passion for the sea and sailing, which is something I admire. Despite the odds, he is committed to being a seaman and I envy the clarity of his vision. He keeps strong with an unfailingly fortitude in the worst circumstances which is how he is able to make it through his suicide mission. There were moments during this story that dragged and felt a little monotonous but that could also be due to the immense technicality of the atmosphere. However, if you are a sailor, this adds a deeper dimension to the narrative as you read and provides a carefully crafted scene for visualization purposes.

A story of growth to maturity and collective journeying.
