After many dark fantasy books, it is nice to have fresh air reading this one. On the other hand, there is nothing in the story that is really interesting. There are a couple of conflicts and mysteries that are dragged on during the whole book and not making any effort in conclude them. A couple of noisy and blurry understandable combats. And a rushed ended.
Good atmosphere and almost interesting characters.

I adored this book. It was a perfect whimsical story and I simply fell in love with all the characters. They are funny, flawed, and chaotic. This book is a wonderful found-family story.
I have seen the movie adaptation prior to reading this, and although I loved the movie, I never understood why people loved howl. After reading the book, I get it. Howl in the book is such a funny smart ass little fucker who you cannot help but love, which is perfectly complemented by how goddamn headstrong and stubborn Sophie is. Their relationship and love for each other (which we see grow from their friendship) is so much more believable and enjoyable in the book.
I also LOVED the writing style of this book. Diana Wynne Jones perfectly encapsulated whimsy on every page. The story always felt fun, a little chaotic, and full of love.
I would recommend this book to anyone (irregardless if you have seen the movie) who loves cozy fantasy, whimsical stories, and found family. This book is perfect for all ages, and I cannot wait to reread this book many times

Eh I didn’t find it very romantic and idk if Diana can write tension or fight scenes very well lol like it’s never buildup it’s just “omg the scarecrow appeared wbaaaat no one’s life seems to be at risk esp not our viewpoint character Sophie” also the twists are all kind of . Lacking in foreshadowing but then howl expects Sophie to be aware of all of them regardless???
I think I don’t rly buy the whole reformed playboy schtick bc of Ms A like I just didn’t find the romance or the plot very compelling so it was just the shenanigans and the fact that Sophie rly be relatable sometimes. Sophie’s family was more interesting than whatever the witch of the waste might be tbh this could’ve been a very Low stakes novel instead of pretending that it was some huge magical struggle like you can tell Diana don’t even like worldbuilding that much
