A great approach to introducing the tragedy of Pearl Harbor to middle school kids. A short book with a big punch. The author's end notes provide a gateway for further discussion.

Juvenile adventure fiction about the son of a naval officer living in Hawaii. A detour fishing with friends leads to witnessing and surviving the Pearl Harbor bombing.

Easy read for lower level readers - high interest topic and character who gets directly involved to show the action.

This was a very short book but a great read for introducing what happened at Pearl Harbor and why people were so upset. There is death, and some gore, so if you have a sensitive child I'd avoid this book.

This is an historical fiction novel about a young boy, Adam, who just moved to Pearl Harbor because he dad was stationed on the Arizona. It follows Adam as he starts school, makes a friend with a Japanese American boy, and finds himself in the middle of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the aftermath of waiting for survivors and how life changed.

A Boy at War is the story of the attack on Pearl Harbor told from the point of view of a young boy who was fishing in Pearl Harbor on the morning of the attack. This book is great for young readers who are interested in history and war.

Okay, I have some feedback for this series to report, finally. One of my students really likes it and gives it 4-stars. He's a good reader and primarily loves fantasy (Eragon/Eldest are faves) with an above-average interest in WWII, and he says it gives "just enough detail about his background and the war situation." He read the whole series in 1 week (and I'm sure). So there you have it.

Again, this review is not mine (it bored me too much to even finish), but rather a testimonial of a 7th grade student.

I don't have a lot to say about this book. It's short, but covers a couple of fairly heavy subjects. The book is primarily about the sense of confusion Americans felt after the Pearl Harbor attack, but it's also about racism and misplaced anger. The more YA and JF I read about war the more I appreciate the nuance these authors are able to incorporate into their stories. I always worry that they will just portray war as a place heroes are born, but so far they've been pretty responsible.
