Fun, military-heavy Gundam story. Beautifully detailed artwork. C'mon - giant robots in space? Yes please!!

More mecha military madness! Great artwork!

This was beautiful! I'm so glad I decided to read it. Having loved the first film, I enjoyed this a lot. Can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

I enjoyed this volume. Ohtagaki's art is still gorgeous, and I loved the sub plot with the child soldiers. Something that's not new to Gundam, but it was emotional and well done.

~3 Stars
(Contains spoilers.)

All is apparently revealed in this volume, as Daryl shows what side he's really on and betrays the team he was originally on. Daryl and Karla join the Levan Fu side, as Daryl wants Karla to get her memory and self back. This could be great or terrible for them, though.
Everything Daryl does here is kind of hard to take, and yet his and Karla's relationship is important to him, as much as his stance on fighting. Their romance seems sweet, but also with an underlying tragedy, it seems.
Then there's the Sojo Levan Fu cause. This just feels like a terribly misleading, brainwashing cult. It felt very off reading that entire arc, as Daryl and Karla arrive and are introduced fully to it.
I'm not following this series, as I'm not a mecha reader. But this was an interesting volume.

A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!

The manga that started the best Gundam movie, designs, and music to date. I want more to read to see what happens after the two films!

Side story takes up a third of the volume. Docked at least a star for that.

 Amazing art.

I think the action sequences were drawn pretty well. Vol 1 had me rooting for Daryl instead of Io, mostly because of personalities but let's see where the series goes.

(review of the whole series)

The series manages to extract so much of what is appealing to me about Gundam. It has beautiful mechanical design, a complicated political backdrop, and the ambiguity of humans operating in new ways. The mixtures of the newtype mythos with religious systems is one I'm shocked hasn't shown up before.

I doubt this would be where you'd start with Gundam, but if you already love UC Gundam, this will likely reinforce that feeling.
