“Even knowing everything I know now, even with all that has come toward us, if I had to do this all over again, I would choose you. Every time, I would choose you.”

The Consumption of Magic is the third book in Tales of Verania. Sam has confronted Myrin and survived, but not without scars. Now he must complete his destiny of dragons and collect the final three dragons of Verania before he faces Myrin again. He must learn to accept his destiny he doesn’t want, reel in his hurt feelings towards his mentors, and face the mortality of the one he loves most.

From the prologue retelling the story of when Morgan raises up Sam and his family from the slums to make him his apprentice (as told from Morgan’s perspective), the book sets the tone of sentimentality and emotionality that just feels like it is preparing you for something. And boy is it, because this was a devastating entry into the series. From Sam’s stubbornness in facing his many feelings and secrets to the betrayal, loss and ultimate sacrifice that closes the book, this is a heavy book.

Plotwise, this does feel more like part two of the second book as it just continues those storythreads while building towards the finale. But the fun is in the journey as Sam and his loyal band of sassy gay misfits (a unicorn, half-giant, dragon, knight, and prince) have their adventures—sass, raunch, banter and all—as hilarity ensues. This is also the spiciest book in the series with a single chapter dedicated to a very descriptive scene involving rimming and DP that was completely unexpected but jot unwelcome.

The Consumption of Magic continues the humor while turninh up the heart and feels, but be prepared for a devastating cliffhanger ending.

Umm okay. Who gave TJ Klune the right to end this book like that? Definitely wasn't expecting it to get that emotional. There are some great moments between our favorite characters in this book, too. Say what you will about how ridiculous things might get in Verania, but man. TJ Klune really knows how to write a great group of characters that you care about. And he most definitely isn't afraid to devastate your emotions, either.

While there were moments in this book that felt a tad repetitive, I found it didn't bother me becuase I loved reading the interactions between the characters. By then time I got to the last quarter, I couldn't put it down!
