Overall, I think this book was pretty good, and it had all the elements that are necessary for me to enjoy a book, but something about it just never really attached itself to me. I liked Malachai a lot, and I did like Sam, too, but their relationship never tipped fully over from I-Can't-Have-You vibes to We're-In-Love-Now-And-That's-Okay vibes, in my opinion. There just seemed like there was a notch missing in their chemistry, and while it was a small notch, the fact that it wasn't there meant I was never wholly sold on them together. The light kink that was sprinkled in was fine, but I wouldn't say it added a lot to their dynamic, because I feel like it could have if there was just a little more spark between them. I enjoyed the plot of this book, and I liked all of the side characters and the main characters' struggles, but this book just didn't really hit for me.

And again in this series, I just had fun with this read. I especially love Malachai. He has been through it, and there were some moments with him that really hit you in the jugular with the feels. His feelings of unworthiness hit really hard, and I think anyone who has struggled with bullying and insecurities can probably relate to what he goes through. The dynamic between Sam and Malachai is so sweet, and their spicy times dip a little into the kinky side of things, which I was not expecting. And, of course, we get the quirky, queer Stars Hollow/Gilmore Girls vibes from the community of Devon Falls, which I greatly enjoy. All in all, this is such a fun and easy read.

Thank you to J.E. Birk for the awesome opportunity to read your book!

this was such a sweet second chance romance.

Malachai has not had it easy in life and has never felt like he belonged anywhere. Sam is trying to get over the loss of his best friend and husband after a tragic accident took him away from him.

watching these two try to navigate their feelings was sweet.
