I didn't know this was fiction until I read the translator's note at the end. Ruffato tells us in the introduction that he is merely presenting a series of letters, saved by their mother and retrieved at her death, from his older brother Celio, who has moved away from the family's rural home into the big city of Sao Paolo as a young man of 19. The story in the letters is a convincing tale of a young country boy growing into manhood in a factory job in the city, where love, friendship, work and politics become the staples of his every day life. Short, well written.
