I got awfully close to DNFing this book several times, and only sheer determination not to let it defeat me (and the fact that I only had just over an hour left in it) got me to the end.

Midnight Secrets is a dark, gothic romance, and not a particularly well-written one at that. There is little to no chemistry between the heroine (who is constantly whining about wanting a bath) and the hero (who spends a good amount of time being pointlessly mysterious and saying things like, "There's only one reason for you to come into my chambers..."). Please, make it stop.

There's supposed to be an element of mystery (as Cassie first takes the position of a maid to find out why her cousin died), but it continually takes second place to Cassie moaning about needing a bath and teaching one of the other maids to read (with an erotic vampire book, no less).

Just don't do it to yourself.

In a nutshell, Midnight Secrets is a classic gothic romance with a great mystery and the barest touch of paranormal. Though I enjoy gothics occasionally, with their dark, brooding heroes, I felt it was a touch overdone in this book. Mainly the sexual tension seemed almost forced. However, I adored the mystery aspect of it. Cassie's all-in approach to investigating is charming, if hazardous to her health. The relationships she develops while "undercover" are sincere and convincing, and the mystery of Killdaren and its lords is very intriguing. I can't wait to read the second book and find out more about
Spoilerthe horseman from the sea.

Although I can't call this quite a series cliffhanger, Midnight Secrets does leave questions unanswered, especially when it comes to the adorable Rebecca. But the main question of what happened to Mary is solved, at least in part, and the reader is left with a satisfactory romantic ending as well.

SpoilerThe only real issue I had is with a seemingly random mention of "their child" on page 287. I'm unsure if this is the accidental remnant of a discarded plotline or just a deep confusion on my part, but it certainly pulled me out of the story rather abruptly just as we were getting to the romantic climax of it.

Midnight Secrets (Killdaren #1) by Jennifer St. Giles – This had some cheesy moments, but it had a really sweet ending! Happy Reading!

I thought this was going to be a cute little regency romance. Instead I got a gothic novel that kept me up all night. Can't wait to read the next one. :)

Wasn't expecting much from this historical gothic romance which was free from kindle, but i was pleasantly surprised. This was an easy read with a bit of an intrigue into the story mix, but the death of Mary got resolved a bit abruptly, and i think the second book would reveal Rebecca's horseman!
