After reading a lot of murder mysteries i feel like there all almost the same one, the plot is heavily recycled from book to book and after a while it just gets boring. I still decided to check out this book though, hoping it would be different but alas it was not and i don't think i will remember this book ever.
During the first 3 chapters, i was hooked wanting to read more and more to find out what happens to the characters, and who did the murder but after that i just got bored as even then the story began to get repetitive of what it had already said.
Not to get started on the murderer, the plot twist of the murderer was kind of obvious, but at least the author tried to cover up who it was with hints towards the person which was good.
I fell like the last part was the best one, it tied up nicely and was far more enjoyable than the other parts a sold 3 and 1 half read

I give it a 3.5* because it was a facinating story after all. A gripping abd fast paced story that had my attention from the beginning. Normally it takes a long time for me to get into a book, but it had a strong beginning. However, halfway through the book it was very predictable and I was just waiting for them to finally figure out who did it and confirm my theorie. Nevertheless, it was a fun and quick read. Chelsea Pitcher does come up with some great murder mysteries.

I normally don’t tend to engage well with mysteries, I find them predictable and too focussed on the who and the why and there’s not enough substance to the rest of the narrative.
Lies Like Poison was TOTALLY different. All four of the protagonists were caught up in their own web of lies and it was thoroughly intriguing watching them unravel.
Belle, Poppy (Jack) and Lily come up with a plan to kill Lily’s mother (Raven’s stepmother). Evelyn has been tormenting her children for years and Belle and Jack can’t bear to see how much it hurts Raven. The three of them brew the perfect murder, they will slip a petal of Belladonna, a petal of Poppy and a petal of Lily into Evelyn’s tea to poison her. They don’t go through with the murder and Lily hides the recipe. Yet, fast forward three years and Evelyn is found dead, cause of death? Poison. Found next to her is the “recipe for the perfect murder” they devised those years ago, but only belladonna is found in the tea.
I was so immersed in this story. Not just for the mystery, but the characters as well. Every character had secrets and demons in their closets. I so enjoyed watching the characters develop, grow and find the strength to be honest with each other, so much so that certain scenes had me balling.
A definite must read, an enticing, complex and modern whodunnit!

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an early copy!

This read like something from 2012 but with queer rep.
Which I mean, queer rep, but...

This is one of those books where all the characters are in love with each other, some platonically, some romantically, some were platonic and now they’re romantic, some were romantic and now they’re platonic... which ya know, I’m sure that’s representative of plenty of friend groups, but it doesn’t always connect with me.

Also for a lot of the book everyone is kind of plotting against each other anyway? I will say that I can guarantee you that you will not solve the mystery, at the very least not in the first half. Unexpected is nice in a mystery/thriller but it doesn’t always equal smart.

There’s some weird stuff with gendering a trans character in this story - it’s a FTM trans boy and up until the second he physically says out loud that he’s a boy, he’s gendered as “she” in the story. It’s definitely not my place to say, since I’m not a part of that community, but it didn’t necessarily sit right with me. I will say everyone is completely respectful of him after and there’s nothing bad that comes to him for being trans but still that’s something I’d check ownvoices reviews about to make sure.

There’s great consent in this story as well as a gentle male love interest and discussion about girls being willing to kill each other for boys (both romantically and like, brothers and male friends, etc) but not willing to fight for themselves in the same fiery way. I really appreciate those elements of the story. It’s just not enough to make the story meaningful to me, to make the ending any less rushed, or make me care about the characters any more.

I like to think it was the fact that I was actually using and Audiobook for the first time but it wasn't. I didn't like this book.

Yes I listened to the Audiobook and took nothing in and I still had to go back and read the actual book and I still couldn't tell you what was going on.

The only thing I know I can tell you is most of the characters are written very well and I liked the mystery aspect but that's it.

I give it 2 stars.
