this was fucking nasty. holy fucking shit. HUGE trigger warning for animal death and animal cruelty. like…. huge. i had to skip pages and skim read parts because i know myself and knew this book wasn’t worth sacrificing my mental health. i would’ve rated it a bit higher had those sections not been in the book, i understand backstory but jesus we get it! overall though this was great, the author’s writing style and the blurbs of interviews and news clippings and emails was really cool, i love when authors do that. i loved the kiddos (mostly… shelley can go fuck himself) and i loved the premise and the scenery despite some passages making me gag, even with me not being easily bothered by gore. this also made me want to  re-read lord of the flies, lol. i went into this book 90% blind and i’d say do the same if you feel like you want to read this. would i recommend this to just anyone though? absolutely not! fuck you nick cutter, i’m gonna think about this book and process everything for a long while!

It was a bit difficult for me to get into the story at first, I'm not sure I entirely like how Nick Cutter writes. I don't love how much animal harm is in the book. I almost DNF it, but I kept reading and I ended up hooked by the tense atmosphere and the character interactions. I really started to care about (most of) the characters and found that I needed to keep reading.
It's a messed up story, but that's exactly what I signed up for.

I've got mixed feelings about this one. Was it bad? No. Was it good? Not necessarily.

This was very much a middle-of-the-road book, in my opinion. I am fairly desensitized to gore so that didn't really bother me. I guess what this book lacked, in my opinion, was a strong connection between me and the characters. This isn't necessarily a judgement on the author's writing style or anything like that, I guess maybe I'm just not the target audience for this?

I really liked what you did here. There were some very terrifying moments that I had to stop in order to cry. There was even one incident where I just had to leave the room I was reading it in to just gather myself. Some nice moments that were sweet especially how their friendship was shown. I felt disgusted going through this but finished feeling better somehow.

I was wondering when the other type of worm would show up and I was surprised. I loved that email from the little girl.

like a really f-ed up Stand By Me. full of gore and guts and things that hurt my stomach (no pun intended). I loved the ending, but I thought it could go without the animal parts

The book wasn't good enough to push me past the animal torture. In a more interesting and well written story I could've handled it.
