such an excellent piece. Tanty especially stole my heart. also, the decision to write the book in carribean vernacular was daring and perfect. at the same time, it was not daring at all but accurate and immersive. so many authors fail to make this leap, but Selvon forces the reader to confront his culture in such an important way that seems to have completely gone over the heads of many reviewers here. there is so much nuance packed into such a tiny novel, everything is just delectable. and as always i would sell my soul for a well-written character driven book.

The Lonely Londoners follows a group of black men who moved to London from the West Indies as part of the windrush generation. The story focuses on racism and classism mostly, but I also felt like it explored misogyny, colourism, and the sexual objectification of black men, black women, and white women. My favourite character is Moses, the narrator, and my least favourite character is either Lewis because of what he did to his wife, or Harris because he kinds of betrays his race. I recommend this book because it has really strong characterisation and explores important topics in detail. And when you think about it, it’s also a story about friendship. ‘Sometimes, listening to them, he look in each face, and he feel a great compassion for every one of them, as if he live each of their lives, one by one, and all the strain and stress come to rest on his own shoulders.’

A very eyeopening insight into immigration. It had a very witty and unique narrative voice. The characters felt like very real, deep and complex people. Read in one sitting!
