Reasonably creepy. This is only the second of Thomas Olde Heuvelt's work that I've read so far and I guess I like his longer works a bit better.

I can’t say jack about picking up hitchhikers, as I’m not a driver like the person in the story. I don’t even have my license. But wherever you are, do not try and get a ride after midnight.

Stay away from tunnels.

And beware of the Tall Lady.

Most of the comments on this one talked about how hair-raisingly creepy it was, but it didn't come anywhere close to that level of spookiness for me. Maybe because I don't visualize things when I read . . . but I do get creeped out by plenty of stuff regardless. Just didn't click that way.

(two and a half stars)

i think i read this when tor first published it, but now having read [b:Hex|25533076|Hex|Thomas Olde Heuvelt|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1431542969l/25533076._SY75_.jpg|21897691] i have a lot more appreciation for the author's taste in horror. this is spooky as hell and feels like a grownup version of "scary stories to tell in the dark".

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is one of my favourite authors and he didn't disappoint with this novella. I loved the urban legends theme and the writing was, as always, great and atmospheric.

The only criticism I have is that this could easily have been a bit longer, I feel like the story and the characters would have benefitted from a little more depth.

Still, it's an entertaining, creepy and quick read.

Conheci este autor holandês com The Day the World Turned Upside Down, antes de saber que tinha ganho o prémio Hugo, constituindo o primeiro conto traduzido a vencer na categoaria.

You know how the story goes é uma história disponível gratuitamente em TOR.com.

A chilly ghost story for an autumn night.
