Fourth in the League science-fiction romance series about an entire universe of plotting planets and governments with its corrupt League against the plucky group of pirates, smugglers, bounty hunters…well, you get the picture.

My Take
This series is full of such a messed-up group of people! It seems as though most of them led the most hideous childhoods, and sometime after they became adults and had even more hideous and dangerous adventures, they find out they're royalty. That or they fall in love with someone who turns out to be royalty…after, of course, they've had some hair raising adventures.

Each story has a core group of characters who fly out in support of the focus character, in this case, they fall out for Caillen Dagan.

For all that, I do so enjoy reading most of The League novels. It's Saturday-afternoon-at-the-movies with all the action, weapons, cool gadgets, and hunky underdogs fighting for good. Besides, it's so much fun to see what Kenyon has managed to imagine this time!

There is one scene at that delicate conference where Caillen rips 'em all a new one, just lovely, lol.

The Story
About to be executed for smuggling, Caillen gets a last-minute reprieve when his real father steps up. Who knew Caillen was the long-lost son of an emperor?

It's not much of a reprieve, however, as Caillen now has to learn all the social and political niceties of being a prince…lessons that are just not sinking in. Not in time for a politically fraught conference between the Emperor of the Garvon and Exeter systems and the Qillac queen.

The impression Caillen makes on all only contributes to his going on the run with one of the Queen's Guard, accused of assassinating the emperor and the queen.

Their only chance is to uncover the truth and discover who they can trust.

The Characters
Caillen thinks he's a no-account smuggler. Turns out he's the long-lost son of Evzen, the Emperor of the Garvon and Exeter systems.

Desideria, one of the Qillac queen's daughters and is currently one of the Queen's Guard.

The Cover and Title
The cover is surprisingly classy with its gradated black to blue background and the bronze?? gilt?? symbol rising up while the title is consistent with the three previous full-length stories.

Non stop action, intrigue, danger and a sweet romance. A race for their lives and those they love have two fighting to survive. Lie's, deceit, and mysteries surround their family histories. Revelations tear their beliefs apart. This story never slows down, just when you think the worst has been done, it gets worse. Romance sweetens the story and has you cheering for a difficult relationship. It follows two people that have lost the little they thought they had only to realize they did not have what they thought. Yes, it's a tangled web.

Caillen Dagen has never had it easy. His sister's are hellion's, he is wanted by authorities and struggles just to stay alive. His life is about to get more complicated. When a warrior women steps into his life everything is undone.

Desideria Denarii, struggle with her warrior status on her planet that values tough heartless women. She fights for her place in her family. She has been neaten down many times of the year. She finally rates an adult status only to have her life and beliefs shattered.

Forced proximity, main characters on the run, secretive assassination attempts on the main characters and their families, family secrets, broken family connections: what more can you ask for? A very enjoyable story that I only remembered the final twist to because of an unusual name
mine, lol: Karissa
And all the loose ends get tied up into a nice little bow (but not in a contrived way).

So much action and back and forth down time then danger time. The romance, while passionate, was sweet and innocent. I definitely didn't see the plot twist after they found out who the villains were. As always Sherrilyn Kenyon kept me on the edge of my seat.

Another great read by Sherrilyn Kenyon. In another recent review I had mentioned how much I love the lost princess/prince coming home to find their family. This was a great futuristic take on that story. Ms. Kenyon brought back some of my favorite characters from earlier novels in this series for some great cameos. Our hero, Caillens is an extremely strong and fierce fighter. The heroine, Desideria, is almost the female equivalent except with less world experience. They are thrown together after plots to kill their parents and even though both are weary to open up to strangers, their circumstances finds them drawing close very quickly.

Extremely well written emotionally, you really feel for both the h/h for all that they have had to endure growing up. They had such a connection because of trauma in their childhood that it lead to such a spark. Loved them and hope to see them as a cameo in a later League series book.
