Chemistry by Graham Swift

Perhaps the best short story I have ever read. Swift beautifully shows all the problems of the family and the effect that a broken family has on a young child. It is begun by a reminiscence of a childhood memory that later took a turn for the worst when a new father comes along, later leading to the supposed suicide of the grandfather. This shows the reality of a disapproved and controlling relationship on a family from a young child's perspective. Thoroughly recommend to anyone.

This story has so many layers of meaning to it, but you must be patient with it. For a short story, I think there was some well rounded development to it, but it still didn't impress me much.

There are many ways to view the characters in this story if you consider the fact that the story is narrated from the viewpoint of a little boy.
