I wavered between 5 and 4.75 stars on this one, the only reason why lower is because I couldn't totally immerse myself in it for some reason? That might have just been a me brain no worky problem rather than the book's fault though 😅 BUT those last two battle scenes were just 🤌 so good. I cried.
Obviously it was really interesting seeing and learning more about Lucien's past, and the author (with Matt and Taliesin I'm sure) did such a great job making sure those elements tied into the Lucien we know from the campaign in a meaningful and impactful way. Holy trauma, though, lol poor guy. It was cool seeing the origins of some of Lucien/Molly's quirks and sayings, like "long may he reign." I really loved seeing his friendship with Cree and Brevlyn, it made them so much fuller as characters than just goons mindles ly following the Nonagon around and made theirdemise, while he stood by so cold and unfeeling at that point, so much more painful .
I really wondered when it got toLucien's death and shattering soul where the book would go from there, and was a bit worried that it was going into stuff we already saw in campaign 2 from the Mighty Nein's POV. But I actually think it was really cool to see Lucien's side of what was happening, like his confrontation with Vess DeRogna before he kills her . My favorite element was seeing how Lucien was "slipping" and Molly was there all along during that time, slowly driving him insane . When it came to the final battles, it was such a lovely idea to have Molly right there alongside them, even if the Mighty Nein didn't know it 🥹 I loved that so much, especially as the Nein are shouting out Molly-related things. Beu punching him with Molly's scarf wrapped around her wrist and yelling "long may he reign" as Molly is goading him was just UGH SO GOOD . It was also interesting seeing the full impact of the eyes and the Somnovem on Lucien since we never really saw the true extent of that with Beu and Caleb .
Overall, I love this book for the extra richness it adds to this world and these characters, AND I WANT MORE, so maybe that is worth 5 stars 🥰

I imagine I would’ve enjoyed this more had I been more familiar with the original campaign and material, but I suppose that’s the risk of IP writing.
For me, this book started off very slow. There were definitely intriguing points, but for the most part, the first half wasn’t much of a page turner. Things started to pick up in the second half, but by then I wasn’t too invested in the story.
Additionally, Roux’s prose is artistic but I found it made it harder to follow the story (combined with or perhaps contributing to my stunted interest).I liked the use of fonts and different sizes to represent different voices and conversations , but the actual wording itself I found to be too long-winded. I think it would’ve been a lot more enjoyable for me had I listened to the story its in original form as a campaign or even if I had listened to the audio book—I could imagine that her writing style would be lovely to listen to (especially because the narrator is Robbie Daymond) .
All in all, while I found certain plot points interesting and can appreciate the writing style, I definitely can’t say I enjoyed it as much as a real Critical Role fan or anyone else familiar with the IP would’ve.
