However, I have no interest in reading about a man whining for almost 200 pages about a woman that clearly has no interest in him. Maybe I would be more emphatic towards Werther if he didn't romanticize the sexual assault inflicted on a woman he doesn't even know and then proceeded himself to assault the woman he supposedly loves more then anything in the world.

Das ist bisher noch absolut kein Grund, dieses Buch so schlecht zu bewerten.
Was meine Meinung dazu so vollständig geändert hat, ist Werthers Einschätzung vom Verhalten des Bauernburschen, welcher in eine Witwe verliebt ist.
Werther sieht dieses Verhalten so:
"Diese Liebe, diese Treue, diese Leidenschaft ist also keine dichterische Erfindung. Sie ist in ihrer größten Reinheit unter der Klasse von Menschen, die wir ungebildet, die wir roh nennen."
Das war leider noch nicht alles, denn es wird ein neuer Bauer an seiner Stelle eingestellt und in seiner Eifersucht bringt Werthers Freund diesen um. Als er dafür bestraft werden soll, versucht Werther, ihn als unschuldig darzustellen.
"Er fühlte ihn so unglücklich, er fand ihn als Verbrecher selbst so schuldlos, er setzte sich so tief in seine Lage, dass er gewiss glaubte, auch andere davon zu überzeugen. "
Spätestens an dieser Stelle hatte ich genug davon und hätte es sofort abgebrochen, wenn ich es nicht für die Schule hätte lesen müssen.
Danach wird es jedoch nicht mehr besser.
Werther küsst Lotte, die Frau die er liebt, gegen ihren Willen, obwohl diese verheiratet ist und ihrem Mann treu bleiben möchte. Ja ihr ist Werther sehr wichtig und sie empfindet ebenfalls etwas für ihn, aber das macht sein Verhalten in keinster Weise besser.
Da er ein Leben ohne sie so sinnlos findet, fasst er den Entschluss, sich umzubringen. Diese Entscheidung ist seine Sache, aber in seinem Abschiedsbrief schreibt er: "Das ich des Glückes hätte teilhaftig werden können, für dich zu sterben! Lotte, für dich mich hinzugeben." und weist sie ganz direkt darauf hin, für seinen Tod verantwortlich zu sein. Das ist so selbstsüchtig von ihm und lässt mich daran zweifeln, dass er Lotte tatsächlich liebt.
Auf jeden Fall ist das ganze kein bisschen romantisch und es hat mich immer mehr angeekelt, wie Werther das Verhalten von sich und anderen mit Liebe und Leidenschaft rechtfertigt, obwohl es dessen Geliebten ausschließlich Schmerz und Leid bringt. Das ist alles keine Entschuldigung für die Dinge die man tut.
