Jag gillar Gipis stil och det ör intressant att se återkommande ting i hans böcker. Men inte samma magi som MBDL! Kommer inte tänka på denna

I read this in high school when I was discovering that graphic novels weren't limited to superheroes. I read a few different books, but of the non-superhero books I read, two stood out. They were Persepolis and this one. While this one didn't quite have the same impact as Persepolis I still found it to be a great depiction. There are some things about living in a war torn country that pictures convey so much better than words on a page. I'd love to read it again, but I haven't been able to track down a copy of this book since. Hopefully I'll find one someday.

This is the fourth work by Gipi that I've read to date, and I have to say that this one is the best of the lot. Gipi uses a wonderfully loose line coupled with monochromatic watercolor fills that shift in intensity as he moves backwards and forwards in the timeline of this compelling story. [return][return]There is a definite thematic sympathy between Notes for a War Story and Joe Sacco's Safe Area Gorazde, but Gipi delivers a fictional storyline that focuses on the difficult proposition of young men growing into adulthood in the middle of a war, using violent crime and cynically manipulated patriotism to try and stay ahead of the death and destruction all around. As the title suggests, this is not a war story as such, but rather a highly effective and moving look at the damage that can be wrought simply by living in proximity to war.

Wow is this good!
Gipi is beyond expert at pacing and tension, not to mention lighting, motion, and framing. This will be a joy to re-read and marvel at.
I only docked it one star because although the story is very well told, the plot is nothing unique; and while the characters ring consistently true, I never quite felt their struggles on my heartstrings.
