I absolutely adored both Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow, so Amor Towles quickly became one of my favorite authors. I was super excited to dive into his third novel, The Lincoln Highway, the story of two brothers who plan to travel to San Francisco to find their mother.
Unfortunately, I found myself greatly disappointed as this novel failed to grip me. Amor Towles is a gifted storyteller, so it was eloquently written, but the story just did not engage me.
The beginning was promising until the characters actually hit the road. As their trip to California veered off course, so did the storyline. Things got repetitive and bogged down with new characters who were unlikeable and unnecessary. The adventures and side stories grew tiresome and annoying. And too many Greek mythology references for my liking.
I loved the amazing brotherly bond between Emmett and Billy but didn't really connect with any other characters except Sally.
At 576 pages, this was about 300 pages too long. If only Emmett and Billy had actually driven to California as planned.

Long, meandering character driven story that had almost nothing to do with the Lincoln highway. This book was not at all what I was expecting to read but was enjoyable. Deeply developed characters. I felt like I was in the story with them.

Whoa. I’m more than a little stunned by the ending. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a story quite this much - unless it was The Gentleman in Moscow - and truly couldn’t put it down. Amor Towles has earned a spot on my favorites list and I’ll be eagerly looking forward to whatever he writes next! His storytelling is magnificent and his writing, charmingly one-of-a-kind. He is a master of what I can only think to call vignettes — little nuggets of a description, tangent, a thought of a character, that surprise and delight every time.

4.5/5 ⭐️ I know that this is a good book. I know that it is well written and it deserves all the praise that it has. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I started by reading it with my eyes and finished by listening. Personally I enjoyed listening to it more. Because the readers did an amazing job.

I was planning on giving this book 5 solid gold stars until I talked to my husband and he pointed out it’s one major flaw, that it truly is only the beginning of a story. And he’s right! I was so unsatisfied with the ending! Because there isn’t one!
It was like here,
“would you like a taste of the filling that goes in my pie?”
“Yes i would! Wow that is delicious!”
“Thanks! You can’t have any pie though.”
