Although a late version of the legend of King Arthur, Simon Armitage's translation and prose masterfully transports us in another time.

I particularly loved the internal rhymes and alliteration used in this work.

I think this version of this text is good, and the nature of the poem is clever, but the story lacks most of the things I enjoy about the Arthurian legend and becomes a long list of battles, all described in far too much detail. It reads like a poetic description of a military campaign.
This isn't a criticism of this authors rendering of the poem, more the original text.

Clever words and phrases. I enjoyed it's pace and rhyme and rhythm. But as the work progressed I became more and more saddened by the stupidity of war, and the ever increasing piles of bodies in this case caused by the vanity of one king and his jealousy of another king.

i had to read this quite quickly due to the constraints of my course load which means i did speed through a bit of the long descriptions of battle scenes (so much of this poem is battle scenes) 😞 but there are bits and pieces in there (especially the prophetic dreams) that i am interested to talk about in class (hopefully)

for me the dream sequence that serve as a prophecy and the actual battle of camlann (which was interestingly not named that, i think) were what made reading this alliterative morte darthur interesting and enjoyable compared to the middle of the poem which was a tad bit too christian even for medieval literature or arthuriana.

i liked that it was much more focused on politics with an almost sympathetic mordred and no love triangle and the discussions of kingship.

probably my favorite morte narrative alongside the stanzaic morte.

it's just, these characters are so human you know? beyond the family feuds, invasions and usurpations, there are these characters who have mixed feelings, love and adoration, hate and anger toward each other and when all is over and ruined, you can't help but ask how preventable it all was if any one character did one thing different than how it played out. that's the beauty and the tragedy of the morte stories for me and this one truly delivers.

Absolutely love the changes that this English writer made to the legends of King Arthur. First one that really focused on Arthur that I've read, with many themes of what it means to be a knight, a king, and a Christian at the time--and that those roles may not be possible to reconcile.

A very engaging writing style - don't let the age scare you. If you have an interest in Arthurian legends, this will definitely keep you interested and reading on. An adventure story fit for all.
