3.5 maybe?

This story is about a 25 y/o black babysitter who is accused of kidnapping the white 3 y/o she’s babysitting. But more than that accusation, it’s about everything that unfolds in the aftermath. It’s about racism and socio-economic privilege and the messy web of excuses and half-truths that people create to cope with their choices.

I liked this story, but the execution fell a little bit flat for me. This was this author’s debut novel! So I’m keeping that in mind too for sure. I’d definitely be open to reading something from her in the future.

I DNFd this book. I did try it, and didn’t like the characters and didn’t get sucked in by the story. So life’s too short. Moving on…

I would rate this closer to 3 stars; I didn’t love the story, but the ending was not rushed which I appreciated!

surprisingly better read than i thought it would be! Alix and Kelly both suck they deserve each other lol. i will admit it was nice to read about a similar aged character who also didnt know where to go in life

This came out 6 months before J. Courtney Sullivan’s Friends and Strangers, and while it’s clearly the better book, the 21st-century-writer/mom’s relationship-with-her-babysitter story bores me no matter how racially charged.

I could’ve passed on both.
