Very comprehensive history-telling, from coast to coast, from before contact until the 1980s, during which time this book was published. Empathetic and dignified treatment of the Indigenous peoples of America, whose various histories are central to the subject matter of the book.

Very dense reading at times, as it is essentially an anthropology textbook. Nothing but the facts. No sugar-coating, no frills.

Monumentally important book.

At the time that the book was published, the leading scientific hypothesis about how the First Peoples arrived in the western hemisphere, which has since been thoroughly rebuked as pseudoscience and scientific racism, was the Bering Strait land bridge "theory". This is perhaps the only detail of the book that one can find disagreement with, because the rest of its pages do not contain arguments, only objective statements of fact.

Definitely would and will continue to recommend, and plan on re-reading in the future.
