This book documents the story of a tortoise that wants to go out into the world and explore without his shell. He removes his shell and thus runs into multiple problems and adventures. This book is illustrated by Eric Carle and he brings his personality into the book in a way that readers will enjoy. I thought it was a beautiful book visually, but I wasn't quite sure what the message of the book was supposed to be and I found that disappointing.

I love Eric Carle illustrations. A young tortoise quickly discovers that life in his shell while slower, is ultimately safer and happier.

The ending was sweet. Otherwise I thought it was a boring picture book with a few mixed messages.

Not written by Eric Carle but illustrated by him, in the simple tale of an idiot tortoise who decided he doesn't need his shell.
Is it symbolic of people who decide that they don't need the support of others? Who believe they can do it all alone without a "shell". Maybe or maybe it is just a story about a foolish tortoise.
Eric Carle's illustrations are great.
Eric Carle 24/80.

Honestly, I was scared for the tortoise, but they survived the elements.

This is NOT a well-designed book for young readers - it's more for someone reading to a youngster, or an older reader looking for something interestingly poetic.
