I agree with several other Goodreads reviews that opine this tome lacked a direct spelling out of Goldman’s philosophy, but if you’ve read any of her essays you know that her influential political theory was tied directly to her personal experience with the vast pageantry of life. More than some other political theorists at the time, Emma Goldman was out amongst the ranks, fighting, living, organizing, forcing mutual aid wherever she went (even prison). Folks (Sarah Vowell for one) criticize the inconsistency and contradicting nature of Goldman’s anarchism, but I love that she was always adapting and revising based on her newest personal experience. It complicates our idea of a fixed revolution, but it reinforces the need for boots-on-the-ground education as opposed to strictly discourse.

This is my third (2.5?) literary foray into Emma Goldman’s life/works and I have to say I love that she maintained the reputation of a woman who loved to fuck. Here was a lady who never cut the fat off of her meat (when she could afford it). Her anarchism was as much about personal pleasure without shame as it was about the liberation of the worker, and I think that’s one of the reasons why she continues to resonate more than a century later. Before sex positivity was even a term, Emma Goldman embodied sex positivism.

There are a lot of details and anecdotes, but the writing is very dry.

I was really let down by this. A graphic novel about the anarchist activist? Sign me up! But something about this is just...off. I think there's too much information and not enough story. I'll just have to read the memoir she wrote herself instead.

Very informative, though tries to pack too much I perhaps...felt cluttered much of the time.

Loved learning more about Emma Goldman, but didn't like the style of drawing and the flow was haphazard. Helped by pro/epilogues.

this illustrated biography is based mostly on emma goldman's autobiography living my life. i felt like the illustrations greatly enhanced the story of Red Emma's journey from Russia to the States and back. Through sweatshops, lecture circuits, publishing, organizing, deportation, love and loss, Goldman's story is a fascinating bedtime tale for the nostalgia of modern-day revolutionaries.

Thanks, Carnegie Library!
