I bought this book several years ago, but previous attempts to read it weren’t successful because comics are a form that I struggle with — but since I found and read Understanding Comics I was able to follow and interpret the stories more easily.

Unfortunately this book was a bit of a disappointment. Although it’s a collection of Asian folk- and  fairytales, i’m not sure that any of the authors or artists are of Asian descent, which makes it feel like a big exercise in appropriation (especially since many of the writers claim authorship, although a few at at least say “adapted by”.   I was particularly disappointed that there was no history or other information given regarding the stories — what regions they’re from and when they’re believed to have originated. The former English Major in me expects that kind of information in an anthology of this sort.

All of that aside, the quality of the writing and artwork varies.

Altogether I’d say give this one a pass.

A really fun and modern twist to these old tales. Some I had heard before, many I had not, but never had I heard (or seen) them like this. A great read for middle grade, teens, and adults.

Received via Netgalley.

This is a fun anthology of lesser known Asian myths. The art styles are nice, not really my favorite, but they're clean and easy to read. Each story is just a quick read, with the basics of the myth but not expanded on very much. So while it's fun reading new myths I hadn't heard before, there's not much substance to them. It's probably best for younger readers

'Tamamo the Fox Maiden and Other Asian Stories' edited by Kel McDonald is a treasury of stories told in graphic novel form.

In the 21 stories told from all regions of Asia, the stories have a series of magical animals, crafty gods, and enchanted objects. From a lucky teapot that is actually a disguised Tanuki to a story of the great flood. The real story (or one of them) of Mulan makes an appearance. One of my favorites was called 'Frog Skin' and it's a nice variant of 'The Frog Prince.'

I really had a lot of fun reading this collection of fables and stories. The art is pretty consistently good throughout. Sometimes with a collection like this there are stronger stories than others. Here they seem to be consistently good.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Iron Circus Comics, Letter Better Publishing Services, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

A fun collection in a good variety of drawing and telling styles, some longer, some shorter, some with a setting in the past and some more modernized. A very nice blend.
