I enjoy reading anything Gornick has to say and although I don’t completely agree with every assessment she gives on books, I do appreciate her insight that we can only bring to the books we read the experiences and wisdom we have gathered so far. As life deepens us, our reading deepens. And the best books have something to tell us each time we dip into them - about the world and about ourselves.

I skimmed around this a bit and enjoyed it but I haven't read the books referenced here so I'd like to come back once I have!

I dipped in and out of interest when reading this but loved the overall message of it.

I felt quite moved when I read the final line. As someone who rereads books often it was lovely to read the thoughts of someone else who has that practice.

I think I must have heard about this book here on Goodreads. It was not what I was expecting and is mainly essays about books and not why she re-reads them.

This is a book that I expected to like, but unfortunately fell a bit flat for me. While I enjoy Gornick's style of writing, the 'personal journalism', this book felt that it was trying to be too many things at once. It slips from insights from her own life to books and characters without a word of explanation or additional discussion. The idea behind the book is certainly interesting, and there were some great ideas, but unfortunately as a whole it just didn't pull me in.
