5/5 stars. I have been interested in the folklore surrounding La Llorona ever since I saw it featured on an episode of Supernatural so when I heard about this book via Uncle Rick I was beyond hyped! Tehlor Kay Mejia weaves together Mexican Folktales, adventure, and science to create this wonderfully weird and spooky middle grade read. I loved all the strong female characters and I’m glad children will have Paola as a role model the way Annabeth was mine as a child. We need more diverse female characters for children to look up to and that’s what Mejia provides.
Minor: Police brutality
When I say content warning for police brutality this covers ICE as well
