Well developed world, believable main characters dealing with the sorts of issues young teens experience, as well as some extraordinary ones!

I really enjoyed this book. Even ignoring that the book is published under Disney Hyperion and endorsed by Rick Riordan . . . I would describe this book as "Percy Jackson-esque". Honestly the whole middle grade kids embarking on a magical journey and dealing with mythical creatures from their culture that they may or may not believe in is a great plot hook. I'm excited for more authors to get in on this and represent more cultures. Plus it's a fun, no pressure way of learning mythology and folktales about other cultures. And by no means am I insinuated that Mejia is just borrowing Riordan's ideas. This book was entirely her own creation. I did not feel like I was reading Riordan's writing. Just that it went along with some of his themes/tropes.

I wasn't liking it much and then I got to the bit with the former classmate and I got really frustrated so I stopped. I didn't like the combination of how long it took for the main character to get what was going on, plus how little the people with actual answers were willing to tell her. I don't know whether I would have liked this as a kid or not, but it's definitely not for me now.
