Look it’s not good. I enjoyed it but that doesn’t mean it’s great. The reveal at the end was rather anticlimactic, and though it well explained and reasoned out, it wasn’t necessarily believe able
I enjoyed it though..

I wasn't sure about this book at first. I started it when it first came out and shelved it. I am a huge fan of this author's work but occasionally, I have been burned and bored by a rare book that just doesn't work for me. I thought this was one of those books. Thankfully, I was mistaken -- I started the audiobook and was quickly hooked by the excellent narration and the engaging murder mystery plot twist. I really liked that this book isn't like anything else I have read by this author or by anyone else. It has adventure, history, romance, angst, creepy thrills and drama -- all in a well-executed novel that I ended up enjoying. This is not a particularly light read -- references to drug-use are a key part of the plot. The angst, in this case, did help a great deal with the drama and chemistry so I did not mind. What bothered me slightly was the historically accurate, but culturally inappropriate aspects of the book -- yes, the British did plunder Egyptian artefacts en masse -- or stole is the more accurate term -- and that made uncomfortable with how flippant and irreverent the MCs were regarding the artefacts at the centre of the plot. But that aside, this is a unique and fun read -- I did like it a lot. I was trying to think of a good analogy for this book -- perhaps Indiana Jones meets Downton Abbey? Not quite ... but definitely, a fun, spooky read ... and a very excellent audiobook!

Described on the cover as a monster mash up, I would say it is more a homage to the gothic novel. It does use an original gothic as the basis for the story but I have not read that one to know what plot differences there are. The romance element is new I would guess!!!
Dr Quentin Armiston is dragged into investigating why self appointed guardians of an egyptian mummy are dying. Two of the remaining guardians, Percival and Maxwell, approach him to help them.
Hilary Maxwell has many issues and dodging the mummy curse is only one.
Spoiler I didn’t like that Percy succumbed too
. We gradually become aware that there is mundane reasons for the deaths rather than fanciful curses and it all becomes quite tense at the end when Armiston puts himself in danger whilst also being in the midst of Maxwell’s cure.
It is set in 1912 so codes of honour and doing the gentlemanly thing abound.
Armiston and Maxwell do become closer after a rocky start and have a glimmer of hope for the future.
It is written in 1st person pov which isn’t a favourite but this one is done quite well and it took me a while to cotton on.
I enjoyed this, taken as what it is and written in a bygone style.

Fun and creepy. It took me a fair while to get into this story, but I enjoyed it. I'm really curious about the original book by Riccardo Stephens, [b:The Mummy|28805554|The Mummy|Riccardo Stephens|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1454152055s/28805554.jpg|49018817], and I wonder how it's been updated.
