I loved this gentle, very historically-accurate-feeling romance between two women in the wake of their service in a hospital during what was still being called the Great War. So much of the book is about grief and moving on and feels very realistic and gentle that I was shocked when magic came up and I realized it was actually paranormal/fantasy. That said, the very mysteriousness of magic and what was going on meant that the "plot" part of the book didn't feel very satisfying; at the end
Sylvia realizes that she has to move on without really knowing what happened to Anna and whether magic was involved or she survived the war
. It was all very nebulous and open-ended. I greatly enjoyed it but it did feel a little... unresolved. The romance was lovely though.

3 stars. This was fine. I did like the characters, Lucy and Sylvia and their relationship and the way that it developed. They were also really great characters as individuals. The writing was good and the plot had interesting elements to it but it never came together for me. I already have book two checked out so I’ll continue on.

A very gentle, very lovely historical romance. Two women dealing with grief, war and magic; changing, evolving and learning to appreciate the strenghts of the other one.

I always loved how this author manages to get me right into the story, how I can feel imerse in that time and place and that didn't change here; the small town feeling is wonderful.

And Lucy and Sylvia are great characters, and I liked the way in which they connected :D

I'm curious about the magic system and looking forward to learn more in the next books in this trilogy.

Light, fun and sweet, a great first story in a new series.

This was a really lovely and heartfelt book, that spoke of grief, of longing, of carrying on despite it all, and of hope. It is alow heat, closed door romance, with absolutely exquisite pining and the eroticism of gentle touches.

Sylvia had made a great impact on me during her brief appearances in Inheritance of Shadows, and her combination of no-nonsense determination mixed with deep affection and longubg to be cared for, was fantastic. She is an excellent character! I loved very much how Lucy was prepared for any kind of support that Sylvia needed, and how this showed her increased maturity as well as the solidity of the relationship between the two of them.

I felt that the magical aspect worked best if you had read the other books, where it fitted in nicely, but I think it would work OK as a standalone too.

I'm very intrigued to find out where the rest of the trilogy will go...

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was sweet and emotional. It touches on the wartime atrocities the characters faced without being intense and graphic, and instead focuses on the bonds they made in that time. It also develops all the characters really nicely, with aspects of their personality showing in flares of emotion and the choices they make.

I found the magical element of the book interesting, and I wish it had been more developed, although it also made sense for the plot that it wasn't that well understood. I'm interested to see how the author continues the story in the remainder of the trilogy, especially as the relationship in the novel was brought to a fairly tidy conclusion.
