I'm never really one to read short stories as they mostly bore me and I find them a bit tedious, however I actually quite enjoyed this book! I'd love if some of them were made into longer stories but I guess the point is that they are short, and short stories can be just as - if not more - terrifying than long ones!

I liked some of the stories in this book but not all of them sadly. There was some horror aspects in some of the stories but not all of them. Some of the stories lacked a sense of motivation towards what was been written and they felt like the had been rushed so the author could realise the book. This book didn't scare me at all with the horror side I just read it and thought that’s not that scary. Xxx

'Unfortunately for him, the pink liquid did not care about his life or his regrets. It only cared about the consumption… of human flesh.'

This collection of short stories was fine. There weren't any real standouts for me, except maybe the one about the pink liquid that reminded me of a cross between The Stuff and The Blob. That was pretty fun!

'Sally held her breath. She had to remain calm. But how do you stay calm when you’re moments away from death?'

This is a great collection. The stories are really short, making this a quick and easy read. They are all very different from one another and all are really interesting

I want to start off by mentioning the cover of this book. I'm obsessed with it and how it brings on the fear before you even get a chance to dive into these really funny yet creepy short stories. From seagulls, to creatures, to witches and werewolves, each story gets better and weirder. These stories are like some of your strangest dreams. You know something isn't right until the shocking twist at the end wakes you up scared.

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. fast friends, backtrack, and salem sightseers were my favourites. Overall I had fun reading each one. Although horror, the stories were not overly gruesome. I think this a great read for those who want to dip their toes into horror or those who want to keep it a little more lighthearted. These stories gave me a bit of nostalgic vibes of watching Goosebumps as a kid a long time ago. Fake somebodies, real nobodies is Goosebumps for adults so If you loved watching goosebumps as a kid you should definitely pick this one up.

The collection plays heavily on the cost of getting what you want. Everything is transactional in this world, some things just cost us more.

1. Salem Village-My favorite of the collection. Opportunistic revenge from someone who does not have the maturity to see what it will cost.
2. A Little Jaunt-Horny teen Greta just wants to hook up with her boyfriend. Her parents have a different idea, and it will cost her.
3. Fast Friends-Lumi meets a creature in the woods. She invites her new friend home. The creatures friendship has a cost.
4. Backtrack-It’s Halloween night and a babysitter takes her poorly behaved charge trick-or-treating. Someone has to pay the price for his bad behavior.
5. Gulls-Mikey’s older brother Fredrick throws a rock at a seagull. It will cost him.
6. She Who Laughs Last-Sally, a substitute secretary at a high school, is the only one alarmed by a liquid in the building. What’s the price of being right.
7. Afternoon Snack -Another short one. A girl pays the price for a carefree life lived without fear.
8. Salem Sightseers -The only survivors of a pandemic in Salem are a witch and a werewolf. Knowledge will cost them.
9. Running Record-Reading teacher Shannon’s anxiety is bad today. She has a new student coming in and it’s observation day. The student reads a terrifying story.
10. The Swing Show-11-year-old Adam has a plan to see Amy at the carnival. When things do not go as planned he makes a wish.
11. Blood Silence-Gregory’s wife Sheila is always forgetting to lock their front door. Gregory finally gets what he wants.
12. AK-47@11-A parent is tired of safety protocols being overlooked at their daughter’s school for Covid protocols. When the safety officer is out with Covid he decides to test the school.

After reading and loving Wicked Blood recently I was looking forward to getting stuck into Fake Somebodies, Real Nobodies.

E.C. Hanson’s latest is a collection of 12 interesting short horror stories featuring everything from witches and werewolves to vengeful seagulls and a collection of different father’s trying to protect their children...in their own unique ways. Oh and of course there’s a clown at some point...there’s always a clown! (The latest version of IT helped with my fear of clowns, but it’s always still there haha)

I very much enjoyed Fake Somebodies, Real Nobodies, it just had a bit of everything. I loved the simplicity of some, such at the opening story ‘Salem Village’ and some were just fun ‘Salem Sightseers’ whilst others like ‘AK-47@11’ & ‘Gulls’ were just crazy!

Fake Somebodies, Real Nobodies is a great quick read and another excellent offering from E.C. Hanson.
