I have just recently joined in the M/M romance book fun, yummy smutty time though I’m no virgin to the gay romance genre. What I mean by this is I have just started reading published books. I have read a lot of good fanfiction and online web comics. So I do know what I like and don’t like in a romance novel. Warning there will be spoilers in this review

I didn’t like this novel. I didn’t understand the plot. I didn’t like the romance and honestly I didn’t really like the main characters though that might be because Isaac reminds me a little of me.

Plot

SpoilerIt might be because I have had no experience with Jewish religion or folklore. So that might be the cause of this but I was so freaking confused. All of the lore was lost on me. I don't think it was because of the fact that this was an audio book because I can read huge books in audiobook form and still make sense of it.

Characters

SpoilerIsaac- was not one of my favorite main characters. I think it might be because of the fact he reminds me of myself. He is the kind of person who clings to the first person that shows them any affection.I had a feeling though scratch got with Isaac because Scratch could tell that Isaac had the power Scratch needed.

Scratch- The prefect body cut out. I couldn't get a read on the demon? Angel? Succubus? at all because other than his looks we got nothing. He was trapped as a whore. He wanted to save his people. I wanted more and I didn’t get any.

Romance

SpoilerIsaac got with scratch once and fell into love with his body. What I want in a romance is interaction between the two. By themselves, learning about each other. I am not talking about just physically but emotionally to. Isaac didn’t even remember what happened the first night and he was going insane over scratch. There is no real transition between a whore and a stranger to soul mates.

Audiobook

Spoiler I didn’t really like scratch's voice. I couldn’t hear it very well. I didn’t like the way the reader was talking when he voiced starches voice and it really irritated me to the point where I wanted to skip his part.

Ending

SpoilerI didn’t know there was a second book but the ending of this book should have told me. It wasn’t really an ending. It was more like a to be continued.

Overall

I didn’t like it. I hope you like it better than I did.

I read this because storygraph was very insistent in recommending it and it was a bit a miss for me. There were some interesting elements; however, overall it was too brief, didn’t really offer character motivations, nor provide any satisfying conclusions.

I've no idea. The only reason I finished this was because I was listening to it on audio.

This is the second work by Damon Suede I've read. It wasn't as compelling as Hot Head, but I know it's supposed to be a story written by a character in his novel, "Bad Idea." It was interesting, but I didn't love it. I'm reading Bad Idea now, and I'm hoping that having read this will add an extra level of understanding to it.

Wonderful

Fun and sexy and intense. A wonderfully layered story and I can see it being made into a graphic novel.

There is a lot going on in this story, more than I expected for a novella. The puzzle in language and interpretation feels like magic, or what you would expect hidden magic to feel like. Immediately after finishing I wanted to read it again; the story unfolds like a bloom.
Highly recommended.

I picked this up after hearing Damon Suede talk about his writing-- this story is about a "librarian" (he's just turning 22, so I'm not sure about his credentials tbh) so it was a one-click purchase. The writing is fun but the story wasn't really my jam.
