A typical young adult story that is light, fast read and a page turner. The plot and the ending is so predictable but I still enjoyed reading it and definitely love the characters.
Avery Shaw chose to experiment on love for the science fare project. If there are 7 stages of grief then maybe she can find stages to heal a broken heart through social experiments.
Her best friend, Aiden broke her heart and now Grayson, Alden's brother became her science partner to earn credits at school and is willing to help her heal her heart. And on the process, romance sparks between Avery and Grayson which is so cute.
Avery is quite a nerd and is the president of the science club while Grayson is a popular jock at school. 2 opposite characters when matched creates this interesting pair.

2023 Audio Update - Still a super cute book. It's been awhile since I've grabbed a YA book, and this one reminded me why I like to throw some YA books into my book rotations now and then. There isn't heaviness to this book, although there is a tiny bit of depression discussed at one point. This book is simply a fun look at the more surface level relationship stuff that can go on in high school. I loved hearing the talented Teddy Hamilton narrate Grayson's POV. I'm used to hearing Teddy voice older characters, but his voice worked for the older and more experienced in love Grayson of the story. Lovely and sweet story. Great audio version. Still five stars for me.
What a super cute book!! I absolutely loved this! So adorable! I had never heard about this book, and then one day when looking on amazon I saw that it was recommended to me based on another book I had looked at. After reading a heavier topic book I was looking for something sweet and light to read, and this book seemed to be just what I was looking for. And it was. Absolutely wonderful!
Avery Shaw is in love with her best friend and birthday buddy, Aiden. She has loved him forever. Aiden, it turns out, is actually in the mood to try something new and branch out from spending all of his time with Avery. Aiden doesn't pick the best way in the world to break this news to Avery, and Avery is devastated. But Aiden's older brother, Grayson, is there to pick up the pieces and support Avery. Through admittedly convenient circumstances Avery decides to partner with Grayson in an experiment for the state science fair involving using the stages of grief to mend a broken heart. Grayson becomes a (not so) independent observer of the experiment, and in the process finds that Avery is not the geeky almost-a-sister that he'd always seen her to be. But can Avery learn to see that there may be more than science behind the new feelings she is feeling for Grayson?
So that's the story -- Avery getting over Aiden in a way that she never imagined. This isn't a book with a lot of depth and hidden meaning. It's pretty straight forward. It is true that the characters in this book are super, duper cliched in so many ways, from the geek squad science club members to the popular jock crowd surrounding Grayson. It is true that there are so many experiences in this novel that may have been a little too convenient or hard to imagine in everyday life. Maybe. But I never ever felt that way as I was reading. Not one eye roll or smirk. Instead, I was thrown into the life of this girl who was so devastated by the loss of not only her best friend, but all the dreams she had involving Aiden and her as a couple. I was equally thrown into the life of Grayson who had a supposedly easy time as a popular guy who could date any girl he wanted, but had never believed he would fall in love with anyone at this time of his life. I loved both of these characters so much! As they were working through their new feelings for each other and trying to make sense of this new situation I could feel myself in the exact same chaos of emotions when I was that age. This just felt so true to my own high school experiences ... well, without the super amazing happy ending like this book. The ending of this book was the way I wanted all my high school fantasies to end. So it made me smile.
Oh, how I wish that I could have been a beta reader for this book, because if there is anything to complain about at all in this story, I would say that it is that the book is a little too short. I wanted more. There were events that occurred in the book that I wanted to see expanded. I would have definitely suggested scenes that could have been lengthened or developed further. I wanted to be there for more of the events that occurred "post shower." I wanted to know more about what Avery and Grayson were thinking. I just loved them so much. I wanted more.
I can't say it enough. This is an adorable book. It is a super sweet young adult romance about first love ... not only what Avery thinks is love, but about Avery finding out who she is in the process of figuring out exactly what it means to be in love with someone else. It is a perfect summer read when you are looking for a light book to leave you smiling at the end. I definitely think that this will be one that I pick up to read again sometime. Loved it! Five stars!

I absolutely adored this book! It was a super quick read. I devoured it in one sitting. I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. I love a book with a smart heroine... even if she is a little naive and makes some dumb decisions. Because, really, who hasn't been there a time or two? Absolutely realistic and relatable book. And fun too.
this one is easily one of my fave romances. Sooo cute!!!
I found myself laughing out loud through the entire book. It's really entertaining and endearing. Take a leap of faith for and with! Grayson like Avery did. You won't regret it!!

It's really sweet. Candy sweet. Quite fun but in the end too sweet for me. I picked it for an easy, light and fun read which it is but I'm just too old for this 😝

Avery Shaw is dealing with a broken heart in the only way she knows how – through science. With the help of the brother of the guy that broke her heart, Grayson, she will go through the seven stages of grief to prove if it applies to a broken heart and can get her over it. Little does she know that Grayson has another experiment in mind – winning her heart.
Once again, this book is another great one by Kelly Oram. So far she has not disappointed me with any of her books. Like all the rest I’ve read by her, I could not put this one down. Sure, it was a bit shorter than her other books (and I would have loved it to last even longer), but it was really good.
I absolutely loved reading the chapters from Grayson’s point of view. He’s definitely a guy, though, so his mind wasn’t quite ever out of the gutter, but he was funny and really cared about Avery. Underneath the playboy exterior, he had a heart of gold.
I did enjoy Avery, but sometimes I almost just wished it was Grayson’s point of view again. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed her sections, but they just weren’t Grayson’s. I also really like that Kelly Oram didn’t create her perfect like so many authors tend to do. Avery has social anxiety and I think Kelly did an excellent job representing it and allowing Avery to move past it.
Libby was also a great character. She had no filter and I couldn’t help but laugh at everything she said. I can’t wait till the next book, so we can get to know her even more.
The ending was great, especially Grayson’s extra Epilogue, which really made me happy and satisfied with the book. Even though it will soon be part of a series, there was no cliff-hanger ending to drive you mad.
I really recommend this book to anyone who’s a fan of the fun, lighthearted teen dramas/romance. I can’t wait to read more of Kelly Oram’s books, she’s easily becoming one of my favorite authors.

Perfect cheesy feel good read. It was super easy and quick to get through so a great book to get yourself out of a book hangover or reading slump! Loved it!

Avery Shaw is a science nerd. Her most recent experiment, to rid herself of a broken heart by going through the 7 stages of grief. Her lab partner, the hunky older brother of her former best friend and the boy who broke her heart.
Avery’s world falls apart when her best friend since birth Aiden, who she has grown up doing EVERYTHING with, decides that he wants to spend time apart and with other people. Shocked and heartbroken, since Avery is convinced their friendship would develop into more, she decides the best way to get over him is to document it scientifically through the 7 stages of grief. Enter Aiden’s older brother, Grayson. A notorious player and womanizer who takes Avery under his wing and makes it his mission to help her get over his geeky little brother. But things start to get interesting when Grayson finds himself falling for the adorably naïve and nerdy Avery.
- Kelly Oram (The Avery Shaw Experiment)
This book is much more than I expected. Yes its light, yes it’s fluffy, yes the main male protagonist makes me swoony. But this book has heart as well and actually has a story more complex than boy meets girl and falls into insta-love.
Throughout the book Avery is convinced she’s meant to be with Aiden despite the fact she’s heartbroken and he no longer wants to spend time with her. She looks to Grayson as like an older brother who has always kind of been around and loves to annoy her. Then when Avery is left in the lurch for her science fair project Grayson steps up to help out, while Avery in return helps raise his Physics from a failing grade. But along the way of their mutually beneficial relationship, something magical happens, and Grayson starts to see Avery as more than his little brothers best friend. Although, whether Avery will return those feelings is a mystery.
Of course, as Avery travels through those stages, particularly Anger and Depression stuff gets real and without a doubt you know that once Aiden realises he’s made a big mistake there’s going to be a showdown between the siblings.
Grayson is an easily likeable character. At the start he is played out to be his sweaty, horny jock who’s a big flirt. But after seeing Avery so distraught over his brother his sweet and protective instincts for her emerge and he is constantly looking out for her. The moment he sees her as more than just his little brothers best friend is utterly adorable.

Avery is also not your typical main protagonist. She’s smart, into science and suffers from anxiety. She manages to go through all 7 stages of the grief process with hilarity and realistic emotions that any teenager/ young adult can relate to.
Things I loved about the book:
Despite being cutesy and a little corny at times. it was highly addictive and the characters were hilarious.
The human and realistic characters that were easy to relate to.
The whole boy falls in love with his little brothers best friend thing just totally gets me every time.
Things I didn't like about the book:
The cover looks kind of childish, and really didn't sell me on the book to begin with, but all the great reviews encouraged me to give it a go.

"I think I need a little space for a while."
For just a brief moment, time stopped...like a heart that had skipped a beat. When it started back up, my life had been forever altered'

"I was scared for her, which was kind of a new feeling for me because I never really pay that much attention to anyone. Aves was just so destroyed after New Years that I couldn't help myself. I was either stepping up my role of overprotective big brother, or I'd developed an impossible crush. "

2.5 STARS
okay so I finished this in like, what, 3 hours ????
more or less.
This book is cute but its too unrealistic for my own liking ? I mean, there are quite a few scene that are really really cute but thats it. Its just that ive read a super lots of books that involved an insanely good looking guy whos insanely famous in school and none of them is like Grayson. Hes just too nice and it seems unreal for a famous highschool playboy, u get me ?
