The Most Beautiful Thing by Kao Kalia Yang is a poignant, heart-touching and wholesome story that is much needed in these trying times. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and I'm so in love with the colour scheme. I would have loved it if it was a little longer and if the reader was provided with more insight into the characters. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the book and definitely recommend it to everyone.

Moreover, since it's extremely short, you can easily read it in one sitting, so yay!

Great read! This true story shows Kalia, a young girl living with her family. Although the family does not have a lot of money, they have a lot of love. Especially between Kalia and her Grandmother. The story revolves around Kalia making the best out of not having a lot, until she wants braces, and the family cannot afford them. Kalia realizes that braces will not bring her beauty, because it is the beauty inside that really matters.
My favourite thing about this book is the respect that the children have for their elderly Grandmother-I think that is an extremely special relationship to highlight. The respect for elderly people is an important message that isn't seen a lot in today's society. It is important that children understand how special these relationships can be, they shouldn't be taken for granted. The lessons we can learn about elderly people and how that is showcased in the book is awesome. The illustrations are incredible! I think this is an important story that can be read perhaps to older children, I found the language a bit more advanced. Great resource when discussing families and perhaps different financial situations. Thanks to NetGalley for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

I can't believe children book can give me so much pain. I learn a lot from this book. Even proverty is their daily companion, they're still taking care and love each other. The way the grand daughter took care after the grandma is endearing. But then my heart broke into pieces when she asked something more to give them to her grandma. And in the last part, I love how the grandma teach her a lot of lessons just by a single sentence.

The Most Beautiful Thing is a stunningly illustrated picture book where the author tells of her childhood memories of her grandmother and her family. Multiple generations of this Hmong family live together and care for each other. The grandchildren all take pride in helping to care for their elderly grandmother who in turn tells them stories of growing up overseas. The family doesn't have much money so the narrator feels a little sad that she can't get a new dress for the first day of school or ice cream from the ice cream truck.

In the end she realizes that those things don't matter as much as her grandmother and the love they have for each other. This is a gorgeous book with a great message of treasuring family over things.
