So … I went into this one with mixed feelings not only because of the title, which hints at exactly what you think it would after reading the past two books (not a spoiler, since I’m not telling you exactly and I’m not telling you if it even happens or not), but also because of the fact it’s a good amount smaller than the first two books in the series.

Unfortunately, I was indeed a little underwhelmed by this final installment in the Crewel world. However, it was not a bad book. It just didn’t quite live up to the fairly large expectations I had manage to create while reading the first two books. Maybe I was spoiled by the settings I was given in them, since they were barely present (or not at all, in some cases) in this one, mostly due to the setting and pace that surrounds this one.

If the action parts of the series were your favorite parts, then this final book will possibly be your favorite, because it does take the rebellion happening in the previous two books by the gonads and bring it front-and-center. What made me particularly happy about this, despite it not being my favorite part of the book, was the twist that was implemented by Albin. I’ll admit, I didn’t quite see it coming. I felt it fell a little flat in the end, but I definitely was a little shocked and quite a bit worried when that twist came into play and I was left wondering what exactly was going to happen in a book that had then suddenly seemed understandingly short where it hadn’t before.

Does that make sense?

Well, either way, I’m not going to give it away. You’ll have to read to find it all out.

Not the best ending, but not a total let down like some other books have been in the past.

I want to like this book more than I think I do. There was too much inaction in the beginning 65% of the book, the action happened too quickly in the following 20%, and there was too little explanation in the end. I never felt like Adelice truly mourned her loses throughout the story, and she kept saying she had a plan in the beginning without actually mentioning a plan or doing anything more than being obedient to Cormac.

And the ending. I just searched the internet for answers, and it seems everyone had the same questions:
Spoileris it Erik or Jost who lives? Erik who Tailored himself to look like Jost? Jost with pieces of Erik Tailored into him? Why not say so? Why no explain? Why was Alix acting so weird when she clearly knew the answers and could have told us, could have told Adelice?
The unnecessary ambiguity spoiled what could have been a very cool revelation.

Overall, I liked the series. I can't deny how clever it is, how witty the characters could be, or how much I adored the first book in the trilogy. But nothing ever lived up to the first book like I'd hoped.

I couldn't put this book down. It was insanely good. But totally heartbreaking...

I'm super torn about this book. It's well written, true to the series, a fast read and enjoyable. But all my favorite people died. I simultaneously want to rate it one star because I'm heartbroken, and five stars because it had me reading the whole thing in one sitting. I'm not super pleased with the ambiguity of the ending but it does fit with this genre of story so I'll roll with it I guess.
I think part of what helped me get through this book, which seems to be the disappointment of the trilogy for most people, is that I read it immediately after book two. I already had high momentum going and it kept me engaged. I do really wish the Adelice had stepped up and become a strong female character because I think she was gutsy and she had a great mouth on her, she didn't actually fight for anyone. She relied on everyone else to save the day and her big plan to save the world was something along the lines of "eh, we'll see what happens when we get there." Even as they were ten minutes away from a conclusion. This book seemed to take all of the magic from the first book, and all of the complications from the second book, and it stuck them in a blender and threw them on the page to see what should happen next. Character personalities changed. Random people cropped up that added no value. The whole Alix thing never made sense in any book, and it was just unnecessary and aggravating. I didn't mind Adelice sitting around in her penthouse cage for the first half of the book because I thought she was finally going to take a stand and plot something super intense and badass after what she did to Kincaid, but she never owned up to her potential. At least when other female leads in dystopians put themselves in the line of fire, they have a plan, and they have guts, and they don't wait around for other people to save them.
idk. I really enjoyed reading these books, but I don't think they are the best example of strong female characters, even if I liked Adelice. I liked most everyone, and then they all fucking die, so that was pointless. There was just no high note to this series' ending. We were all rooting for Adelice to get her family back, and for her to be able to be with Erik, and that wasn't too much to ask for. This book is a perfect example of why people write fanfiction, to satisfy what should have happened for the characters who deserved better.

Just to be clear, I do recommend this series, and I loved the world building and the characters, I'm just not happy with the execution of this book.

I don't know if it's just pregnancy hormones, but I cried at the end.

I'm heartbroken that this series is over, and still so hung up on the ending. I always hope for happy endings even though I know dystopian novels rarely end on a happy note.
