Omerta is another mafia story by Mario Puzo. It is a great book about Astorre Viola, an only heir to a great don, adopted by another don to be a Qualified Man. Like Puzo’s other novels, the story focuses heavily on family and loyalty. And like other Puzo’s books, the writing and the plot are steady throughout the book. There were many details given on each character, making them more real and sympathetic. However, the ending was very anti-climactic. Overall, still a great fun read.

The last Puzo novel, published just after his death. Perhaps because of this, it feels unfinished, after a great start and set up, the ending feels rushed and a little underwhelming. That said, it has plenty of Puzo's familiar themes and world - mafia, betrayal and double cross, violence and sex - and there is still plenty to enjoy in this quick read.

About the Book: Don’s death brings on a cataclysm. His children, including the adopted one, are getting circled by vultures, corrupt law, other families, and such. As pressure to choose between civilian life and their place in the family rises, the chain of Omerta, vow of silence, is tested. And as the chain is only as strong as its weakest link…

My Opinion: The first half, maybe even a little more, was great. Felt like a new game on an old mafia board, where corruption and intrigues flourish, but new players can enter the board, and muddle things up a little. But characters got no development, and despite how great some were, eventually it just lost the luster, as plot holes emerged, and second half, a fast paced tale someone rightfully compared to Scooby-Doo script, began.

This book sadly lacks the finesse and depth of The Godfather. There's lots of action, but very little substance.

What I expect from Mario Puzo. A book that is not particularly well written, but enjoyable. It seems that Puzo was able to write better females as he grew older as if they were *gasp* people, and not just supports for the male leads.

The plot / ending is what you'd expect from this trilogy. If you've read The Godfather or The Last Don, this will go almost exactly how you'd expect.
