Collection of essays. Well-sequenced, grouped by theme. The essays flow seamlessly. As always, Hobsbawm's writing is characteristically engaging--you can hear his voice throughout-- and he does not shy away from expressing his personal opinions on historical events, trends, and personalities, casting moral judgment even. Even in the shortest of essays, his abundant historical knowledge and piercing erudition graces the pages. It is amazing how learned he is, being able to write at length about a multitude of topics under the umbrella of culture, with traversals into science, politics, etc. Hobsbawm is in a league of his own when it comes to historical writing.
