As an avid genealogist, I am always entranced by family stories. Especially the ones that pass into legend and are handed down through the generations. Author Terri Lee has crafted a novel from the tales of her grandparents and produced a love story rich with historical detail and emotional pull. From the halls of the Vermont elite, to New York in the Jazz Age, through the crash of 1929 and into Prohibition... we follow the young lovers Frances and Frankie through tremendous changes in their immediate surroundings, and in the world at large. The society girl and the Marine are meant for each other despite the disapproval of Frankie's family. Their love endures through great trials: loneliness, poverty and devastating loss. Yet like steel before the forge, they emerge from the fire stronger and the reader cheers them on at every turn. Lee is a gifted storyteller who has penned a romantic tour de forceÑall the more impressive for being rooted in her family history. I enjoyed reading it very much.
