On paper, I feel like I should have really liked this? This historical fantasy type setting usually works for me, heist plots are interesting, and I am a sucker for found family. I do think this book spent more time on the (lackluster) romances than it should have, but I could see myself not minding as much if I was in a different mood.

I think my problem is that more than anything I'm a character driven reader and I need to like the characters. Apart from Jin, I didn't really care for anyone, and so it was hard to care what was going on with them. Jin deserved better friends, honestly. He spent a lot of time having information kept from him and having to work around Arthie's love interests.

I wanted to DNF a few times, and I knew I was going to come away from this book displeased when I remembered it was the first in a series and seemed like the kind of book that was going to end on a big cliffhanger. That assumption was correct.

I think that if you're the type of reader who connects with the type of character that Arthie is, and you don't feel like the romance elements get in the way of the rest of the story, you may enjoy this. The audiobook narrator was okay, but it seemed like she was kind of whispering the whole time.

A vampire heist book with tea and pastries, what more could you want?

This book was decent, but I wasn't really gripped by the story. It was so, so similar in a lot of ways to Six of Crows, but I didn't feel that the stakes were as high. The characters lacked emotional depth for me, so I didn't feel connected to them during emotionally charged moments.

There were a few good twists and turns that I honestly didn't coming, although retrospectively I definitely should have. Overall, I think this series has promise, but I'm not sure I'm going to continue with it.

 First off.
⭐ 5
I loved the story and characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and FSG for this audio arc.
Maya Saroya, Thank you for bringing these characters to life.

This feels beautiful and fun and very fresh!  Vampires, twists and tea. I love Arthie and I need every main character to be as fiery as she is. I am a huge found family lover and this book DELIVERS!
This is a very character driven book and the heist does take a backseat in act two and three, if you’re here for a heist you might not be happy. IF YOU WANT DRAMA AND PLOT TWIST… You want this book.
Spindrift is not just a tea house, it’s a home for everyone she loves and is afraid to love.

NOW Spoiler

FLICK’S MOM BEING THE RAM!? Why? Who is the Wolf? Has he been there the entire time?? Also Penn shouldn’t have died- at all.
Arthie being a vampire is very much in your face but it makes sense to distract you from other twists.
Jin turning into a vampire?? Trauma on trauma. I just want to give him a huge and find his parents.
