Incredibly hard to put down. Every character came alive and the mystery was really good and plausable. I highly recommend this novel

There's a woman who has lost her long-term memory. A smiling man attempts to abduct her, but her friend Ada rescues her. Shortly after a supposed family member turns up to claim her. And then she vanishes. About the same time, the local police are investigating two suicides, but Peter Diamond realizes they are actually murders. I can't say more without spoiling it.

Everything in this mystery works well. The police investigation is suspenseful. There's some good comic relief especially from Ada Shaftsbury, a woman under the care of Social Services who has a shoplifting problem. What's really fascinating about Ada is that she is a brilliant amateur detective. What's maddening about Ada is that she speaks aggressively to authority figures and has no niceties. Although she was a supporting character, she's the most memorable.

This was probably my least favorite in the series thus far. I still enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next one.

I am working my way through the Peter Diamond series. This one uses an amnesia trope, which is annoying, but the mystery itself becomes interesting and the characters are worth getting to know.

What I like most about the Peter Diamond series is that Lovesey draws upon the setting in and around the city of Bath. The character of Peter Diamond is also a draw. He is the irascible, but lovable, detective, who frequently acts before thinking. He is brilliant, although sometimes wrong when he follows his gut instincts. I read this novel quickly and was fairly well satisfied with the ending. I like the way he has two murders and a mysterious amnesia victim and brings all three plot lines together at the end.
