Okay, tha magic is pretty complicated, so that took some getting used to, but totally worth it because SO SO SO good.

Crazy trying to keep everyone straight!

Takes a little bit to learn the new words, but Corry had made a wonderfully interesting world. This would make a crazy beautiful movie. The storm effects, circus, real life vs hidden.

I wanted so much to enjoy this, but I was so disappointed, the magic system is so overly complex and the world building seemed to be lacking. I really wasn’t keen on the love triangle (and I usually love a well executed one). The thing I did love was the writing style, the prose is actually lovely, just a shame that more development or editing wasn’t focused on for the other details. I think with the world building and magic system details worked on, this could be really good.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

I tried. I really did.

But there was so much complex language thrown at me in the first 50 pages that reading felt more like a chore than something fun. I tried skimming over the Russian words but there were too many and they were too frequent. I tried replacing them in my mind with something more understandable, but I would confuse myself-- was this the word I used 'invisi-realm' for, or was this another, new word?

Glancing through a number of reviews, it seems I'm not the only one who feels like this. I wanted to give this book a fair chance (even though I usually don't go for books set in the past). But the language bogged me down.

Life is too short and 2020 has been enough of a mess. I've got tons of other books on my TBR shelf and I've vowed to stop wasting time on books that don't grab me within the first few chapters/~50 pages.

Corry L. Lee’s novel Weave the Lightning is an electrifying debut (pardon the pun) that infuses magical resistance with a Russian flair.

It's not one of those books that keeps you hooked since the first pages but it's a fascinating and well told story, entertaining and engrossing.
I liked the Russian setting and the world building. The characters are well developed and interesting.
I'd like to read other books by this author.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I didn't even finish the Kindle sample; I had downloaded it after seeing this featured on Whatever.

The book started with a little bit of action, enough to let the reader know that there's going to be some political plot, with our presumable heroes struggling against the government.

It then bogged down into explaining the magic system. I usually enjoy innovative magic systems in fantasy, and this one could have promise, but I got bored with the amount of info dump in relation to actual plot or character development.
