I am reading this is more of a publication order. So this falls a lot further back in the time line with characters like Jimmy, Arutha and Locky. It was nice to go back in time to visit some characters at this part of their journey. James and Locky still only squires. There is some mention of the Empire and the Acoma that helps illustrate the timeline.

It holds up mostly because my interest in the characters. I have gotten used to the tangled webs and intrigue in a way that Feist writes, but this one is a lot more of a straight line. It feels like the characters opened their own choose your own adventure books to follow their quest lines. While it is not bad, I feel like it is missing something.

While this and the set of books it falls in are more side story and possibly not necessary to read for the main story it is a nice side trip so far. It seems some of the reference of adventures from characters during the Serpentwar Saga is what will be found in this Riftwar Legacy set of books.

It’s a solid story but not as good as it could have been. The end is quite abrupt and it would have been more interesting to focus more on the Moredel.

I’m a sucker for anything Midkemia but this is definitely one of the weaker stories in the series. It’s based on a video game of the same name and boy does it read like it! Lots of “go to X place and find Y” as well as a suspiciously similar plot to another book in the series. I did enjoy the characters so a few stars for that but not much else.

Didn’t love it as much as the previous books. It was very go here, do this, go here, do that. Also gutted that I got attached to two characters (the magician and dark elf) that then ended their gameplay. Womp.

It was exciting to read more about certain characters. However the plot was slightly spoiled for since I read the Serpentwar saga first. I did really enjoy new characters added.
