Healers by Jonel Abellanosa is a book I finished in one sitting. Its masterful incorporation of Filipino culture into the storyline added depth and resonance to the narrative. The story primarily revolves around Luis, an immortal child, and eventually introduces us to Victoria and Armand, his fellow immortals close in age.

Through their journey, the book vividly portrays the challenges of immortality—losing multiple families as they outlive them and the dual-edged nature of their healing powers. In Filipino culture, the strong value placed on family is evident, and it’s quite common for younger generations to still receive support from their parents and grandparents even up to early adulthood. This book skillfully blends elements of the supernatural and the real world, placing a significant emphasis on the importance of family and the pursuit of goodness.

As the plot unfolds, we witness the moral dilemma faced by these characters, torn between embracing their immortality or pursuing a conventional human existence. Having already endured the hardships of immortality, the last few pages show how these kids grapple with the trials of humanity.

In its entirety, Healers by Jonel Abellanosa is a literary gem that held me captive from the first page to the last. The book is an unforgettable exploration of life, immortality, and the profound decisions that shape our existence.
