So it would seem that once again Peter Parker has been brought down to nothing. Okay, that’s been happening for a while, but it also appears to be the focus of this series so far. Man, they just really love to kick poor Peter like a puppy dog, don’t they? It breaks my heart.
I’m actually fascinated in their choice of a villain for Spider-Man this time around. The guy is easy to underestimate, but he knows Peter’s strengths and weaknesses, and he’s using that against him. That’s not something you see every day, so it’s certainly gotten my attention.
There’s a whole lot of references to stuff that has happened to Peter in the past, so this may not be the best series to dive into if you haven’t read anything before. Then again, better late than never, right?

So, I'm still mad at Spencer for Secret Empire, which caused Marvel to gaslight Jews about Hydra and them being stand in for nazis. The plan was honestly to hate read this and laugh about it being bad - but it wasn't. It was quite fun, and I found myself caring about what happened to Peter Parker particularly: the human, rather than superhero problems, were what got me here...

So I'll be continuing for now.

I tend not to like issue #1 of anything. (I'm the same way with series premieres on television: they feel like all setup and no payoff, and setup isn't usually fun to get through.) And this had a lot of setup. There were also a few references that seemed to me to scream "This is 2018, not whatever decade those old cartoons were written in!"

But… I am interested to see what this team will do with this character who, despite all the hours I spent watching on television, I have never previously read a comic book focused on him.

So, three stars, mostly because of the setup. I am hoping that I will like issue #2 enough to bump up to four stars.

I had a hard time following at the beginning bc it’s my first comic ever, but the end and the storyline are both really good.
