fascinating

Oh the twists and turns through the “creative” life of Aunt Munca. I was gripped by the sheer scale of her deceptions, any time it seemed that surely there could be no more surprises she managed to push on leaving even more devastation in her wake

Remarkable account of a family’s secret lives, uncovered piece by piece.

While atypical (I think!), the story gives some insight into twentieth century English life and mores.

An absolutely fascinating account of Ferdinand Mount's aunt "Munca". The tale he tells is of a woman who couldn't seem to tell the truth to anyone. FM's interest is piqued by another relative and he sets off in search of the real Aunt Munca, a woman who has lied about her age, her father, her children, her marriages and has left a trail of destruction a mile wide.

Absolutely entrancing book and highly recommended.

Thought this book would have been much better than the reviews of it. So much painstaking detail on the familial lineage that it becomes distracting. It was a bit interesting but I got lost with all the different family relationships going on.

At the end, I wondered what was so interesting about the story. Yes it is quite fascinating how one can hide their backgrounds without garnering much attention. I was more interested in the lurid details but there wasn't much of that. Instead we go through painstaking meticulously detailed family tracing, which in my opinion is somewhat boring.
