Book was a great read, a bit slow at times but overall it was a pretty good read with a few surprise elements mixed in, can't say I'm to fond of the ending.

I liked the historical parts but didn't care much for the hero. He did improve with retirement, though.

I was very disappointed with this book. I found the protagonist, Marshall Stone, very unlikeable. It wasn't until towards the end of the novel that I started to feel something for him. The book starts off slow and jumped around too much for my taste. The heart of the novel, the story of the girl in the blue beret, took too long to get to. I personally would have enjoyed the novel much more if the story would have focused more on her and brought her into the novel much sooner than it did. I personally would not recommend this book.

It was good, but I am glad it's over.

This story focuses on Marshall, a WWII veteran shot down over occupied France. After retirement he goes to France indefinitely, with the idea of trying to find the French citizens who sheltered him and snuck him out of the country to safety. As a result, much of the WWII action is told through Marshall's memories of it, or through character's account of their experiences to one another. This really didn't do much for me - I would have rather just had a first-person, real-time account of the French resistance aid to American aviators.

A book about the French Resistance during World War Two sounded interesting and I was looking forward to reading this book. I was disappointed. The main character, Marshall, was self centered, a narcissist, and rather dull. He seemed uninterested in his fellow soldiers, and equally uninterested in his own family.

I wanted to read more perspective on the French Resistance and the girl in the blue beret, and less on Marshall.

The writing was did not always flow well and the novel was very slow to start. I am disappointed with the story and would not recommend this story.

This is a fascinating book. It's an interesting tale of nostalgia and terror told through an aged man who feels his youth is escaping him. An intriguing look at World War II through an American/French perspective.
