Don't see 3 stars as a bad thing. I enjoyed reading the novella, but since it was so short, the pace is lightning quick and I found it difficult to feel "dug in" to the story and the characters. This also means that the emotional and dramatic moments didn't pack the emotional punch that I wished they would've. Overall, it was a cute sci-fi story that dealt with realistic consequences.

Look. I like sci-fi. I like romance. If you want something a bit reminiscent of [b:The Martian|18007564|The Martian|Andy Weir|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1413706054l/18007564._SY75_.jpg|21825181] then grab this shortie right up! (It’s on KU FYI)

Detailed in the science, training, and the expedition as well the nuances of the growing feelings between candidates Cyril and Scottie. When things go tits up, as they invariably do when space is concerned, love will find a way to prevail.

Sexy with an emotional heft that made me tear up. I really can’t ask for much more than what was delivered! Another Z win!

I enjoyed this
Cy and Scottie I felt were good together.
Because of the short format we do jump a bit - they went friends to lovers in the space of a line and a number of months - so at times you do feel you miss some of the story. This also applies to the actual Mars element. I would love a long version.
Having said all this, the character story was good, engaging, making me wish for more.

This was a nice short. I would LOVE a full-length m/m astronauts on Mars novel!! It really did work well as a short, though. They got me in the feels, even if I did want a few extra scenes because I'm greedy :) Still pretty satisfying.

I love the structure of the story. The writing flows nicely. Characters are really likeable. :)
Recommended! Especially for lovers of The Martian.

To Cari Z:
I apologize for you catching the brunt of my frustration. Your book is not the worst, where "all things Russian" is concerned, but it is definitely a final drop for me personally. Thank you for not coming directly at me for this review and thank you for not going to GRT to take it down.
I implore you to use the resources that GR members offer whether it's Russian or Southern drawl or any other subject you are not familiar with. It's time the authors realize that their audience comes not from English speaking countries anymore, but from all over the globe.

----------------------------

2 stars off for Russian.

I am so fed up with the authors who can't be bothered to ask for help with the foreign language.
There are so many of us here, from every corner of the world, and we are readers, too! We do get offended when our native language/history is butchered or twisted beyond recognition time after time after time, simply because authors couldn't spare two minutes to reach out and ask for help.

Here is "Ask An Expert" link: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/249694?group_id=20149 . There is Regional Experts thread somewhere in there. FIND IT. USE IT.

Maybe I am overreacting right now, but these are my feels.

On the book itself:
Unfortunately, it suffers from what most short stories/novellas suffer from: lack of word count. I loved the set up, enjoyed the characters, but at the same time the second part of the story was a bit of a downer, rushed and under-explored. I hope that one day it will be revised and turned into a full length novel. 3.5 stars.
