An interesting if overly cynical read. A bit too heavy on the economic determinism, but still entertaining.

An especially relevant book as we watch Putin invade Ukraine. The book isn't only relevant to dictators but also speaks of the bad behavior incentives embedded even in a democracy. The book also has a great analysis of the perils of foreign aid.

This book was long overdue yet somehow a bit ahead of it’s time. I particularly enjoyed the first 75% of the book. Towards the end it seemed to devolve a bit. If you are into political science, history, geopolitics, etc., then it’s worth a read. However, I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who’s already familiar with the topic because it might prove less insightful to them.
