The seventh book of a series, “The Raid on Troy,” is easily enjoyed as a standalone novel. Murray Lee Eiland Jr. weaves a more believable version of the Trojan War, recounting the story as a historical tale rather than as a highly mythologized epic. Major alterations of the traditional mythology, such as Agamemnon being an escaped slave instead of the offspring of royalty, breathe fresh life into a centuries-old story. Rather than being pawns of the gods, the characters in this retelling are motivated by their own greed and, unlike in the original, the sack of Troy is not blamed on the infidelities of one woman. While it’s impossible to know how accurate this proposed history is, Eiland’s twist on the timeless legend makes for a thrilling read.
